Félicien Rops (7/07/1833 - 23/08/1898): Pornocrates (1878)
Belgian artist and engraver Félicien Rops is considered to be the inventor of the modern half-nude or, as its scandal provoking appearance was called in his day, the 'deshabillé'.
In a letter to a Maurice Bonvoisin, Rops included a design for a cabinet with doors so that his work could be exhibited discreetly, hidden from those who were 'not ready' for his art.
The cabinet he suggested shows a remarkable resemblance with an earlier design for the first NKdeE Cabinet.Félicien Rops, born in 1933 as the only son of a well-to-do trader in printed fabrics enjoyed a priviledged education. His farther died in 1849, leaving him sufficient means to further his artistic career without having to worry about his financial position. A student at the ULB in Brussels, Félicien met writer Charles De Coster in 1851, a friendship that developed into a mutually rewarding association. In 1857 after the success of De Coster's Legendes Flamand, illustrated by Rops, the famous journalist Alfred Delvau introduced Rops to the Parisian artistic circles, and when Rops took up etching with Félix Bracquemond in Paris, he was soon to become the most sought after illustrator of literary publications, closely associated with the literary strain of Symbolism and Decadence.
Rops met Baudelaire in 1864 and the encounter was a cornerstone in his artistic development. In 1866 Rops delivered the frontispiece for "Epaves" an edition of the censured poems of Baudelaire's 'Fleures du Mal' and he was with Baudelaire when the poet collapsed in Namur, an event marking the beginning of the Poet's final stage of his syphilite condition.
Pornocrates, undoubtedly his best known work, created quite a scandal at the 1886 exhibition of the XX Group whom Rops was invited to loin as a leading figure of the Avant-Garde in 1883. Besides marking Rops' shift from realistic depiction of modern life to Symbolism, it shows us a perfect example of early Modernist mysogenic intellectualism, a prostitute taking the place of the ancient goddess Fortuna in an allegorical representation of 'Pornocracy': civilisation being run by courtisanes having the men in power eating from their hands. Very naughty indeed.
